Berberine: The Glucose, Cholesterol Miracle
Revered for centuries in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, research and studies show that the properties of berberine are anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immune enhancing. Berberine has proved useful in treating a wide range of bacterial, protozoa, and fungal conditions (think autoimmune and leaky gut!). Recently berberine has become a subject of intense research in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes, Insulin Resistance, and Hypercholesterolemia.
The advance research has included numerous animal and human trials, and have shown the effectiveness of berberine for improving blood sugar metabolism and lipid balance. In 2021 a phase 2, randomized and controlled study was done with berberine on a population of Type 2 diabetes with fatty liver disease. In 18 weeks, the test consistently showed the effectiveness of berberine in lowering liver fat, improving glycemic control, lowering A1C, and aiding with weight loss. After 3 months overall cholesterol dropped by 29%, triglycerides by 35% and LDL was lowered by 25%. Some research suggests that berberine may be as effective as conventional type 2 diabetes drugs prescribed by the medical field.
